Is it possible to find God on the internet? Well, if you go to www.yahoo.com it’s pretty easy. Every link on the front page linked to either information about who God is (wikis or just general information sites), or sites about Christianity, Judaism, or just religion in general. Also, the image results yeilded good stuff as well! Yahoo!, you may be bought by Microsoft soon, but at least you haven’t sold your soul :) WTG!

Things To Remember 1

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile. - Jeremiah 29:11-14

Do It Yourself Politics

Have you ever thought, “If only we got the right person in office we could overturn ____ law” or maybe “If only we had a celebrity spokesperson ____ cause would really take off”? Well, I have. I remember in the election in 2004 a number of people I knew decided to vote for President Bush because he was an evangelical. Now I find myself not wanting to vote for Obama because of his pro-choice views. But is this biblical? I hadn’t considered it until I listened to a sermon by Voddie Baucham (one of my new favorite speakers). He starts on in Jude 3:

“Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

Apparently, Jude had planned to write to them about salvation, a very important issue. But instead, he decided that contending for the faith was so important he pushed the topic of salvation down the list. Notice who he says needs to do the contending. He doesn’t say “find the best candidate to contend for the faith for you,” nor does he say “find a great celebrity to contend for the faith for you.” He says “I appeal to YOU to contend for the faith.”

So let’s start worrying about how we can best contend for the faith ourselves. “Contending” isn’t voting. “Contending” is going out there and getting the truth of the Gospel message to a world that needs to hear it. That’s what going to be an agent for change in the world, far greater than any politician or celebrity will ever be able to do for Christianity. When the people of God start doing what God has asked us to do, that’s when God will bless America.

Examining the Prosperity Gospel

Examining the Prosperity Gospel
Creative Commons License photo credit: noahwesley

My pastor recently gave a sermon on stewardship entitled “How to be Rich Poor!” It was a good sermon given in the negative about how to live a life that God won’t bless. For example, if you don’t want to reap what you have sown (2 Cor 9:6), be sure to give with a bad attitude, because we know God loves a cheerful giver, and we don’t want to be shown God’s love.

Get it? I hope so. Let’s move on.

It really made me think about the prosperity gospel. A person who maybe was coming to our church for the first time might be lead to think, “This is a message on how to get rich, so if I give money to God, I will reap a reward of money! Sign me up!”

Is this a true way to think about 2 Cor 9:6 tho? Does God really want us to be financially rich? Is the fact that your are rich show that you’re favored somehow by God? Let’s look at the facts.

Still Gotta Love the KJV

Still Gotta Love the KJV

I’ve recently purchased a King James version of the Bible. If you don’t know, it’s the version with all the ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ translation. Really great stuff, adds another element to reading the Bible. But for all it’s elegant speech, it does get a little silly sometimes:

“Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh.” John 11:39

If that’s not funny, I don’t know what is. :)

Finding God on Google

As a web developer, there’s often times where I need to do a certain task, but I’m unsure of how to do it.  Luckily, when I don’t know, Google does! Type in my search terms, and within seconds I can find a link with the information that I need.

Luckily, Google also does a pretty good job for people looking for God. 4 out of the top 10 searches are for Christian based websites, and two others are listed under “Religion” and “Spirtualality.”  Two others were for computer sites, which I found odd :) An atheist site and a youtube video round out the list, so all in all, not a bad place to go.

Of course, if you’re reading this and have a question about who God is, what He’s like, and/or what it means for you, feel free to post a question in the comments section.

For Him.

Maybe this isn’t the place to look for God. Or maybe Christians aren’t that familiar with StumbleUpon and SEO yet.  At least one of my heroes, John Macarthur, made the list :) Thoughts?

Why I’m Blogging (even if no one reads this…)

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge.2He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said:3“Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.4As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.’

I’m blogging to honor God.  I believe God calls us to go out (Matthew 28:19) and scatter the seed of the word wherever we’re at.  The results whether that seed grows or not isn’t up to us.  While we can train the best we can at scattering that seed, we can’t make it grow ourselves.  It’s all up to the Lord to make it grow.  But God is honored by scattering that seed as best we can simply because it’s what He told us to do.

For Him.

Taken from a discussion on illvision.net

Scientology and Christianity don’t really have 2000 years apart if you think about it. Christianity, in a nutshell, has four parts: Creation, the Fall, Redemption (Christ), Glorification. Lets look a little closer in between ‘Creation’ and ‘the Fall.’

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,3but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

4“You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman.5“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” - Genesis 3:1-6

What happened here at the end? In short, the 2nd oldest religion in the world was founded: the worship of man instead of God! You see, man decided that the wisdom that God gave them wasn’t that great any more, and thus removed God as their top priority and replaced Him with themselves! Seeking to server their new god, they sought the wisdom from the tree and ate of it, but the fall actually happened before that first bite.

This is not so different from the beliefs behind scientology:

“The main Scientology religious practice is spiritual counseling called “auditing.” It is a unique form of personal counseling intended to help an individual look at his own existence and improve his ability. Through viewing his own existence, an individual attempts to walk an exact route to higher states of awareness.” - http://www.religioustolerance.org/scientol1.htm

Sound familiar? Well, it should. It’s just the fallen man continuing the quest to serve his favorite god: himself!
